Learn Seatweaving, Knitting, and Crocheting
We offer a number of classes in seatweaving, knitting, and crocheting. If you are interested, please check the schedule with the Millcreek Township Recreation and Parks office.  Call 814-835-4122 for details. 

Learning Seat Weaving of all types

Seat Weaving classes will again be offered through the Millcreek Township Recreation and Parks Office.  The classes will meet on Tuesday evenings (7-9pm) and on Friday mornings (10-12am) at the Asbury Community Barn on Asbury Road. This will be our 10th year of offering these classes at the barn.   We have had a great following with some weavers having been with the class since we began.  

 All you need to bring is a chair or stool to weave a seat into and an interest in learning how to weave a chair seat.  We teach all types from Rush to Caning, even the prewoven caning installation.  All material and tools will be available to help get you started. You do need to register with the Rec and Parks office.  Everyone is welcome.

Classes for the Winter of 2012 will begin the week of January 9, 2012.  Call now to register.  The classes are open to everyone.  Discounts are available to Millcreek Township residents.  The Rec and Park classes may be the best deal around.     

Millcreek Township Recreation andParks Department

A new class offering, we will start with a basic basket to practice some basic basket-making skills. We will then move to more advanced handled baskets.  The final project will involve weaving a large Cherokee Gathering Basket.

·         Dresser Basket:  This basket can be used on you table or dresser to hold pocket change, keys, and other small items.  The tight weave holds small objects  The basket makes a terrific small gift basket.  This basket has a round base and rim.   

·         Williamsburg-style Basket:  This medium-sized basket replicates a style made by Williamsburg, VA basketmakers.  The unique handle helps guide the basket’s design.  It uses a square base with a round rim and a wooden handle. 

Easter Basket:  This basket design incorporates many colored weavers to celebrate our risen Savior.  This large basket incorporates a round base and uses narrow weavers to create a tightly woven basket.

 Chicken Scratch Embroidery

 This technique is also known as Depression Lace, Amish Lace, and Amish Embroidery.  It produces a beautiful lace over gingham effect.   All materials provided in class.

Sweatshirt Painting

Bring a plain sweatshirt and learn how to design and apply a design that will last for years.  All materials provided in class, except the sweatshirt you bring to class.

 Upcoming Classes

 In the spring, you can look forward to a Fleatique class, where you can work with us to design new and functional uses of items you pick up at flea markets, yard sales, auctions, and estate sales. 

• Take an old dresser and create a media center for the family room
  
• Use an old coffee table to create a game center
• Use a dresser drawer to create a storage ottoman for the kids' room
• Use wire baskets to create new lighting and wall decor
• Make country wall decor using old baskets

If you are interested in basketmaking, seatweaving, knitting, or crocheting classes, or if you are interested in a demonstration of handweaving to your organization or event, you can contact us.

Save money for your wedding by making some of your own items such as hair embellishments, jewelry, wine bags, candles, and gloves.  The cost for 4 projects of your choosing is included in the class.
